❗️Reports say Trump seeks tougher terms and changes to Iran agreement
Reports citing Axios and The New York Times say US President Donald Trump has requested changes to a draft agreement that negotiators had reportedly brought close to a deal with Iran.
According to an Axios report published on 31 May, Trump wants revisions to provisions concerning Iran’s nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with US officials seeking clearer terms on Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, timelines, and stronger nuclear-related commitments.
The New York Times separately reported on 31 May that Trump rejected several Iranian demands and sent a tougher counterproposal, which sources said is intended to accelerate the process and pressure Iran into accepting the deal.
Iran is insisting that detailed nuclear discussions take place during a 60-day period following a broader agreement that would also include a ceasefire in Lebanon, while sources cited by Axios said Tehran’s response could take up to three days.
