❗️While Israeli strikes drive Lebanese death toll higher, Lebanon's president and prime minister push forward with empty diplomatic maneuvering
Lebanon's President, Joseph Aoun, met with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam at the Baabda Palace to review the expanding security crisis in southern Lebanon. The discussions focused heavily on the widespread devastation across the Tyre and Nabatieh districts, targeting civilian areas and cultural sites.
In response to Israel's non-stop killing of Lebanese citizens, the two leaders agreed to immediately intensify high-level diplomatic communications to put an end to what they termed as "condemned Israeli practices" violating Lebanese territory.
The high-stakes meeting also served as a strategic review of recent trilateral military talks held in Washington between Lebanese, US, and Israeli delegations. During the briefing, both leaders evaluated the ongoing diplomatic maneuvering ahead of the next scheduled round of negotiations on 2 and 3 June.
Officials noted that the Lebanese side used the Washington summit to explicitly reaffirm "its adherence to the priority of a ceasefire," while balancing daily state efforts to manage the growing crisis of families forcibly displaced from their homes due to Israeli attacks.
