🇨🇴🗳 — Abelardo de la Espriella won the first round of Colombia’s presidential election with 43.7% of the vote and will face left-wing Senator Iván Cepeda in a runoff on June 21.
Cepeda, who is backed by President Gustavo Petro, secured around 41% of the vote despite polls suggesting he would finish ahead.
De la Espriella is viewed as a pro-U.S. conservative aligned politically with President Trump, while Cepeda represents the left-wing coalition tied to Petro’s government.
The two candidates present sharply different approaches to Colombia’s long-running internal conflict, which has intensified again in recent years.
