On Sunday, 31 May 2026, the Israeli army announced that it had fully occupied Beaufort Castle (Qal’at Al-Shqif), along with its surrounding mountain range and the Saluki Valley.
Israeli soldiers reportedly raised the Israeli flag over the site, alongside flags of the Golani Brigade in some images. The attack is described as the deepest Israeli ground invasion into Lebanese territory since the 2000 withdrawal, more than 26 years ago.
According to reports, the castle has since been turned into a forward military base, with its elevated position being used for surveillance and fire control over wide areas north of the Litani River.
