The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally requested that the public prosecutor open a criminal investigation into what it described as systematic abuses, including sexual violence and torture, committed against French citizens by Israeli forces.

It stated that those affected were among hundreds of aid workers aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla bound for Gaza, which was intercepted by the Israeli navy in international waters and had its vessels unlawfully seized.

French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot said the legal referral was based on a disturbing diplomatic report prepared by the French Consul General in Turkey, documenting serious abuses against detained activists, including sexual violence, forced exposure to extreme cold conditions, severe beatings, and repeated psychological humiliation.
