Iran and the Sultanate of Oman alone have the right to exercise sovereignty over the territorial waters of the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Monday.
Gharibabadi stated that the Strait of Hormuz has two coastal states, Iran and Oman, adding that both countries have the right to exercise sovereignty over their respective territorial waters.
He added that, under wartime conditions, Iran has established new regulations governing passage through the Strait and does not allow any external interference, stressing that any arrangements must be coordinated with Oman.
The deputy foreign minister noted that consultations between the two sides have made “good progress", adding that Oman also recognizes its sovereign rights.
He further highlighted that the United States, by threatening Oman, is violating international law, adding that Tehran has urged Muscat not to submit to pressure and to exercise its sovereignty in peacetime.
