Western parties should not use the word “must” when speaking about Iran, Esmaeil Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said, adding that Tehran has moved beyond that language for the past 47 years.

Baghaei affirmed that Iran makes its decisions based on the interests of the Iranian people.

On US President Donald Trump’s claim about lifting the blockade, he said that Tehran needs to see what actually happens on the ground, whether this is a genuine measure or merely propaganda.

He also noted that message exchanges are still ongoing and that no final understanding has been reached with the United States so far, adding that at this stage Iran’s focus is on ending the war, and that it is not negotiating the details of the nuclear program.

Baghaei said that the Strait of Hormuz has been subject to special Iranian measures and is closed to hostile military vessels, adding that Iran and Oman should establish mechanisms to safeguard their national interests and security.

He explained that the Strait of Hormuz lies within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, adding that “we have faced a special situation that cannot be ignored.”

Baghaei also said that what the Americans describe as a “naval blockade” was an illegal measure and a violation of the ceasefire.
